About

The missions of the Department of Psychiatry are not only to teach the knowledge of modern psychiatry and clinical skill but also to enrich the student’s mind. Thus, as teachers of department of psychiatry, our visions and characters regarding the teaching focus on the integration of the latest advances in psychiatry and neuroscience, psychology, social science, and medical humanities for the purpose of understanding human behavior and treating the patients with medical or psychiatric illness. Psychiatry Faculty members are involved in teaching in all years of the medical school academic program, including the medical history, art and psychiatric disorder, medical paradigm and ethical practice, medical psychology, and psychiatry.

In terms of research, we focus on the bipolar disorder, metabolic syndrome, substance abuse, sleep and cognitive function in three university hospital and emerge much of outstanding papers published in international journal. We also established international collaboration relationship with Pittsburgh University in US, Toronto University in Canada, and Keio University in Japan for investigation regarding the aging process in major psychiatric disorders.

Prerequisites	Medical students with basic knowledge of psychiatry
Additional Requirements	Eligible participants should discuss the aims and needs of training program in advance. Tailor-made training program could be provided on-request. Applicants need to be current medical students or graduates from a university or an equivalent institute in another country. All submitted application forms must be written in English or Chinese. Applicants need to provide health records and current immunization records in addition to proof of personal health/accident insurance with overseas coverage, or proof of national health insurance. For safety reasons, students are strictly prohibited from making any clinical decisions or physician behavior; including inquiring or touching the patient, diagnosing or giving advised on any medical issues during the program, even if the applicant holds a medical doctor license in a foreign country.

Content	A. Outpatient Psychiatry To understand the psychopathology, clinical manifestation, diagnosis, and management of psychiatry disorders, with emphasis on the commonly seen by a psychiatrist in the outpatient clinic setting. To be familiar with the acute, subacute, and mostly chronic and rehabilitation phase of psychiatry management in the outpatient clinic setting. B. Inpatient Psychiatry To learn to perform a competent screening interview including complete mental status examination of a patient, in order to identify psychiatric symptoms and make a differential diagnosis in a setting of acute psychiatric care. To plan for further evaluation and tests that would be useful in differential diagnosis; make recommendations for biological, psychological, and social treatment interventions; assess whether or not dangers to or from a patient exist, under supervision of attending psychiatrist. C. Psychiatry subspecialty Will have the opportunity to understand indications and procedures for lawful involuntary commitment of a patient to an acute ward for treatment, as well as involuntary community treatment, under the supervision of attending psychiatrist with forensic psychiatry subspecialty. Will have the opportunity to participate in parts of evaluations of insanity defense, custody determination, and other forensic issues, under the supervision of attending psychiatrist with forensic psychiatry subspecialty. Will have the opportunity to learn the assessments of normal development and psychopathology in childhood, treatment methods, and research in major disorders of children and adolescent, under the supervision of attending psychiatrist with child and adolescent psychiatry subspecialty. Will have the opportunity to learn the assessments of psychopathology, addictive behavior, treatment methods, and research in substance use disorders, under the supervision of attending psychiatrist with addiction psychiatry subspecialty.
